Nigerian Producer, Bankulli Recognized at Grammy for Beyonce’s The Lion King: The Gift Album

Nigerian Music Producer/ Talent Manager, Abisagboola Oluseun John, professionally known as Bankulli was recently recognized by Grammy Awards for his contribution to Beyonce’s The Lion King: The Gift album. Bankulli was celebrated for participating in the Lion King album which was nominated for the 2020 Grammy awards.

Bankulli was celebrated for his role as vocalist, vocal producer and songwriter on the music project. The Lion King: The Gift album was also nominated for Best Pop Vocal Album. Filled with excitement he dedicated the recognition to God, not leaving out those who impacted him either directly or indirectly. He further thanked the music icon, Beyonce for the special opportunity to work on her project.

Bankulli’s work as talent manager has earned him recognition in both Afrobeats and Afropop music across the world. Earlier in his career, he helped build the defunct Mo’hits records alongside co-founders Don Jazzy, D’banj, Wande Coal, D’Prince and more. He had also subsequently managed D’banj’s solo career for a while. 

He has been associated with popular Nigerian and international singers like Tiwa Salvage, Kanye West, Davido, Wizkid, Maleek Berry, Mike Dean and others.

Bankulli has worked with artists and producers from Nigeria, the United States and the United Kingdom. In 2011, he worked on the collaborative studio project “Watch the Throne,” which was created by Kanye.

Through the Black is King album, Beyonce presented elements of Black history and African tradition with a modern twist and a universal message and what it truly means to find your self-identity and build a legacy. The goal of the project is to show that “Black is regal and rich in history, in purpose and in lineage.

The Beyonce’s Black is King album featured selected Nigerian artists across music, dance, stage and film. The Nigerian music stars featured are Wizkid, Burna Boy, Mr Eazi, Tekno, Yemi Alade and Tiwa Savage.

Other Nigerian features in the Black is King album include Folajomi ‘FJ’ Akinmurele who played the role of the young African king in the visual, Mojisola Odegbami; a 69 years old grandmother who got cast in the visual while on a medical trip to California in July 2019, Stephen Ojo popularly known as Papi Joe; a 22 year old Nigerian-born dancer, musician, model and  actor who has also worked with Janet Jackson, Wizkid, Rihanna, Teyana Taylor  and most recently Beyoncé.
