Niko Omilana Wins Best Media Personality at the MOBO Awards

by REFINEDNG

Some people win awards and deliver polished, rehearsed speeches. Niko Omilana won his first MOBO Award and immediately told the BBC he had frauded his way to it.

That, in a single moment, is exactly who Niko Omilana is and precisely why 8.72 million YouTube subscribers, an army of supporters known as the NDL, and now a MOBO trophy all belong to the same person.

At the 2026 MOBO Awards, the British-Nigerian content creator, prankster, and occasional political candidate won ‘Best Media Personality’. He beat a competitive shortlist that included Bemi Orojuogun, better known as Bus Aunty, DJ Ag, Melissa Holdbrook-Akposoe, Nadia Jae, Remi Burgz, and Uche Natori, among others.

It was the first award of the night. Niko collected it in peak Niko fashion.

The Speech, the Quote, and the Trademark Honesty

Accepting the award, he thanked Manchester and the MOBOs. He then delivered a line that landed with the crowd immediately. ‘Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, and today is a present, so chase your gift guys.

‘Then, backstage in the winners’ room, he told BBC Newsbeat with a straight face that he had ‘frauded’ his way to the win and that his fellow Beta Squad members were, in his opinion, bigger personalities than him. Whether he meant it entirely is debatable. That he said it without blinking is completely on brand.

He also gave a nod to the NDL, the Niko Defence League, the dedicated fanbase whose votes he credited for the win. For anyone unfamiliar with how Niko Omilana operates, the NDL is less a fanbase and more a movement; the same community that helped him receive over 49,000 votes in the 2021 London mayoral election, finishing fifth, and that has followed every chapter of a career that refuses to be put in a single box.

A Career That Has Never Stayed in One Lane

Born in London to an English mother and a Yoruba Nigerian father, Niko Omilana has been creating content since 2011 and has spent the years since building one of British YouTube’s most distinctive and loyal audiences. His channel has accumulated over 764 million views. He is a core member of the Beta Squad. He has competed in Soccer Aid and multiple Sidemen charity matches. Also, he ran as an independent candidate in the 2024 UK general election and has appeared on Celebrity Traitors.

And now he has a MOBO Award.

When asked backstage whether he would run in the next elections, he said he was still weighing things up. Which, for Niko Omilana, means the answer is probably yes, and that whatever comes next will be as entertaining as everything that came before it.

The MOBO ‘Best Media Personality’ win is a recognition of something that is genuinely difficult to manufacture; a personality so consistent, so watchable, and so entirely itself that an audience of millions built up around it organically. For a British-Nigerian creator who has spent over a decade doing things entirely on his own terms, that trophy belongs exactly where it landed.
