Olympics First Timer Chukwuebuka Enekwechi Qualifies for men’s Shot Put Final
Olympics first-timer Chukwuebuka Enekwechi delivered an impressive performance and we are so proud.
Chukwuebuka ranked seventh after attaining a mark of 21.16m on the Men’s Shot Put Qualification table. The athlete secured a non-automatic qualifying spot at the final after winning the fourth position in Group B.
Others who advanced to the final with a non-automatic qualifying spot include Armin Sinancevic of Serbia, Kovac Joe and Peyton Otterdahl of the United States, Kyle Blingnaut of South Africa, and New Zealand’s Gill Jacko.
Chukwuebuka will now represent Nigeria at the final of the men’s shot put event at the ongoing Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. The final is slated for the 5th of August, at 3:05 am Nigerian time.
Chukwuebuka is up against other finalists such as USA’s Crouser Ryan with 22.05metres mark, New Zealand’s Walsh Tomas – 21.49m, Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Mesud Pezer – 21.33m, Brazil’s Romani Darlan – 21.31m (SB), and Italy’s Weir Zane – 21.25m (PB).
Earlier, two of Nigeria’s representatives at the Tokyo games picked up medals at the tournament. Blessing Oborududu won Nigeria’s first silver medal in the women’s 68kg wrestling category. The 32-year-old wrestler had earlier won 7-2 against Mongolia’s Battsetseg Soronzobold in the semi-finals to secure a spot in the finals.

Also, long jump champ Ese Brume clinched a bronze medal, Nigeria’s first medal in this year’s Olympic games, when she recorded a 6.97 metres jump in the final of the women’s long jump.
Chukwuebuka is the 2018 Commonwealth Games Silver medallist and reigning African champion in shot put.
