World Bank Opens Applications for Africa Fellowship Programme 2027

The World Bank Group has opened applications for its Africa Fellowship Programme 2027, offering young African scholars an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in international development while working alongside leading experts at one of the world’s foremost development institutions.

The programme is designed for talented African nationals who are completing, or have recently completed, a PhD in fields relevant to the World Bank’s work. Since its launch, the fellowship has helped build a strong pipeline of African researchers and professionals pursuing careers in development, public policy, academia, think tanks and international organisations.

A Six-Month Opportunity To Shape Development Policy

Successful applicants will undertake a six-month fellowship beginning in January 2027 at the World Bank Group’s headquarters in Washington, D.C., or at one of its country offices.

During the fellowship, participants will contribute to research, economic policy, technical assistance and lending operations that support the World Bank’s mission of reducing poverty and promoting shared prosperity. Fellows will also gain practical experience in policy design, knowledge generation, institutional development and innovative solutions that address development challenges across emerging economies.

Beyond the professional experience, the programme provides an opportunity to collaborate with global experts, strengthen research skills and expand professional networks within the international development community.

Who Can Apply?

To be eligible, applicants must:

  • Be African nationals.
  • Be enrolled in the final year of a PhD programme or have completed a PhD within the last three years.
  • Be 32 years old or younger by 1 January 2027.
  • Demonstrate excellent written and spoken English.
  • Possess strong quantitative and analytical skills.

The fellowship is open to candidates whose research aligns with the World Bank’s areas of work, including economics, public policy, infrastructure, governance, climate, education, health, agriculture and other development-related disciplines.

How The Selection Process Works

The selection process will take place in two stages.

In the first phase, the World Bank will shortlist candidates based on their academic background, research expertise and alignment with the needs of different units across the organisation.

Shortlisted candidates will then proceed to the second phase, where final selections will be made in consultation with the relevant World Bank teams. Successful fellows will be offered six-month consultancy appointments beginning in January 2027.

Application Deadline

Applications for the World Bank Group Africa Fellowship Programme 2027 close on 25 August 2026.

Interested candidates can submit their applications through the official fellowship portal: https://wbgfellowship.worldbank.org/

For many young African researchers, the programme offers more than international work experience. It provides a platform to contribute to policies and projects that have a lasting impact on communities across the continent and beyond.
