YouTube, an American video-sharing platform has announced a $100 million Black Voices Fund for artists and content creators. It says that artists and content creators from Nigeria can now apply for grants from the fund. The Black Voices Fund aims to offer support that will improve the content and visuals of Black artists and content creators over the next three years.

Alex Okosi, the Managing Director of Emerging Markets for YouTube in Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) said that the Black Voices Fund will be invested in artists with the aim to provide fresh narratives that will reveal the intellectual power, authenticity, dignity, and joy of Black voices, whilst educating audiences about social justice.

The fund, which was first announced in June 2020 will provide a platform for improvement, expansion and class for artists and content creators. Alex Okosi said that the fund is part of the initiatives proposed by YouTube to ensure that it remains an online community where Black artists, creators and users can share their stories, thoughts, lifestyles and get protected.

In addition to the funding initiative, Alex Okosi stated that YouTube hopes to provide a consistent platform for educational trainings, workshops, and community events to Black creators and artists in the world. It also plans to unveil product changes and innovations that will enhance the effectiveness and use of the YouTube moderation tools.

The Black Voices Fund is in line with YouTube’s commitment to amplify marginalized voices on content and to invest in products and policy changes that will advance the company’s mission of lending everyone a voice.
