$5m Tomato Processing Plant ‘Commences’ in Kaduna.

Agriculture provides raw materials to many industries which form the background of the nation. More importantly, agriculture provides food and other agrarian products.

Tomato Jos, an agricultural production company just “commenced” a $5 million tomato processing plant in Kaduna state.

The company, Tomato Jos which operates a commercial farm system, recently made the announcement explaining how they were taking a bold step to embark on a $5million tomato processing plant project in Kaduna State.

The ceremony was hosted by the Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai and was witnessed by CBN governor Godwin Emefiele, US Ambassador to Nigeria Mary Beth Leonard and John Coumantaros, chairman of Flour Mills of Nigeria.

During the ceremony, the governor said his government was thrilled that processing facilities owned by private investors were being located across the state, and were complementing its ability as a foremost primary producer of food.

Tomato Jos is a company founded by Mira Mehta whose model is to help smallholder farmers to grow excellent tomatoes and convert those tomatoes to make high-quality tomato paste and in the last five years, the company can boast of producing seven times the national yield of tomatoes in the country.

Mira Mehta says that Tomato Jos is already providing 2500 jobs and intends to put 3000 hectares under cultivation between it and its out-growers and that its processing facility will handle 80-100 metric tonnes daily.

The company has also earmarked N7 billion for investment within the next five years to fully scale up its operation in Nigeria.
