Nigeria’s senior men’s basketball team, D’Tigers, opened their latest FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 African Qualifiers window with a hard-fought 84-81 victory over Tunisia in Luanda, Angola, on Thursday.
The closely contested Group C encounter saw the Nigerian side overturn an earlier loss to Tunisia in the qualification campaign while giving newly appointed head coach David Fizdale a winning debut.
The result also strengthens Nigeria’s chances of progressing toward the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup in Doha, where Africa will be represented by five teams.

Nigeria edged the opening quarter 23-21 before Tunisia fought back to take a slim 42-41 lead into halftime. Despite trailing by as many as eight points during the first half, D’Tigers stayed composed and gradually closed the gap through disciplined defence and timely shooting.
The third quarter remained evenly balanced, with Nigeria carrying a narrow 64-63 advantage into the final period.
With just minutes remaining, Chimezie Metu buried a crucial three-pointer to hand Nigeria a 75-73 lead before Ike Iroegbu followed with another clutch three that extended the advantage to 78-73. Those key moments proved decisive as D’Tigers held off Tunisia’s late rally to seal an important three-point victory.
Returning Stars Deliver When It Matters
Several returning players played significant roles in Nigeria’s success.
Chimezie Metu marked his return with an impressive 17-point performance, matching Ike Iroegbu, who also finished with 17 points after orchestrating the team’s offence throughout the game.

Wes Iwundu enjoyed a memorable debut for D’Tigers, contributing 14 points and providing energy on both ends of the floor. Uche Iroegbu also made an important impact with 13 points as Nigeria’s balanced attack proved too much for Tunisia.
The starting lineup featured Ikenna Iroegbu, Caleb Agada, Wesley Iwundu, Chimezie Metu and Michael Eric, with coach Fizdale rotating experienced options from the bench throughout the contest.

Big Win for Fizdale and Nigeria’s Qualification Campaign
Beyond the victory itself, the result carries extra significance for Nigeria. It avenged the team’s 88-78 overtime defeat to Tunisia during the opening qualification window in November 2025 and gave David Fizdale the perfect start to his tenure as D’Tigers head coach.
Nigeria will now shift attention to the remaining Group C fixtures against Guinea and Rwanda, knowing that every victory moves them closer to securing one of Africa’s coveted places at the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup.
With experienced leaders returning, exciting new faces making immediate contributions and confidence growing under a new coaching staff, D’Tigers have given themselves valuable momentum at a crucial stage of the qualification campaign.
