Just days after Nigeria celebrated two remarkable academic milestones, with two students being recognised by Cambridge as the world’s best in English and Mathematics and a 16-year-old making history as the country’s youngest chartered accountant, another inspiring story is unfolding on the international stage in Rome.

This time, three exceptional young Nigerians are representing the country at the 2026 International STEM Olympiad in Rome, Italy, where they are competing against some of the brightest students from 154 countries in mathematics and science.

Their journey is yet another reminder that Nigeria’s greatest export may well be the brilliance of its young people.

The three representatives are Chimdiebube Onwubiko, Don Anele Munachimso Marvelous and Egejurum Onyedikachi Ethan, each of whom has already built an impressive academic record despite their young ages.

Chimdiebube Onwubiko, a student of Evergreen Schools in Enugu, is widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s brightest junior mathematicians. He has reportedly mastered K.A. Stroud’s Engineering Mathematics, a university-level textbook that many undergraduates find challenging.

Don Anele Munachimso Marvelous, from Diamond Special College in Owerri, has earned recognition as one of Nigeria’s most accomplished young science students. He emerged as Nigeria’s best Chemistry student in the IGCSE examinations, won the ₦5 million grand prize at the 2026 South East Maths Olympiad, secured first place at the National Mathematics Competition in Abuja and also received a $100,000 scholarship to study in Canada.

Completing the trio is 11-year-old Egejurum Onyedikachi Ethan, currently in Primary Six, who holds the title of Nigeria’s best primary school mathematician after winning the primary category of the South East Maths Olympiad. His confidence has also attracted attention after choosing to compete in both the mathematics and science categories during the Olympiad.

The students travelled to Rome alongside their teachers, Chisom Unachukwu and Anthony Iwegbu, with every aspect of the trip funded by education advocate and Educare CEO, Alex Onyia.

From flights and visas to accommodation and logistics, Onyia personally sponsored the team’s participation, describing the investment as one that could shape Nigeria’s future. Speaking before the competition, he expressed confidence in the students’ abilities and reaffirmed his commitment to creating opportunities for gifted children.

“I will continue to push our bright minds to global stages,” he said, adding that today’s investment in talented young Nigerians could transform the country in the years ahead.

The students have already completed their mathematics and science examinations at the Università Campus Bio-Medico di Roma, with the results expected to be announced during the official award ceremony.

Their participation also comes at a significant time for Nigeria’s academic community. Earlier this year, concerns emerged over the country’s reduced participation in major international mathematics competitions due to funding challenges. Against that backdrop, the Rome appearance demonstrates how partnerships and private support can help ensure talented students continue to compete globally.
