Marvel Studios has officially revealed the next chapter in the Black Panther story, announcing that British actor David Jonsson will play Prince T’Challa II, the son of the late King T’Challa, in Black Panther 3. The announcement was made during Marvel’s Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con, with the film scheduled for release on December 15, 2028.
The casting marks a significant moment for one of Marvel’s most celebrated franchises. Jonsson, who has Nigerian and Sierra Leonean heritage, now steps into a role that carries both cinematic history and emotional significance following the passing of Chadwick Boseman, whose portrayal of T’Challa helped redefine superhero storytelling around the world.
A New Era Begins for Wakanda
Rather than recasting the original T’Challa, Marvel is continuing the story through his son, Prince T’Challa II, who was introduced as a young child at the end of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

According to director Ryan Coogler, the third film will follow the character’s coming-of-age journey as he embraces his identity and prepares to carry forward the Wakandan legacy.
Coogler returns to direct the film after leading both previous Black Panther movies. Letitia Wright will reprise her role as Shuri, while Winston Duke returns as M’Baku, continuing the core cast that helped shape Wakanda after Boseman’s death.
The announcement was one of Marvel Studios’ biggest reveals at Comic-Con and immediately sparked excitement across social media, with many fans praising the decision to build on the existing storyline instead of rebooting the franchise.

Born in London, the 32-year-old has Nigerian, Sierra Leonean, Caribbean and Swedish roots. After training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), he earned recognition through performances in Industry and Rye Lane before taking on leading roles in Alien: Romulus, The Long Walk and Wasteman, the latter earning him the BAFTA Rising Star Award.
His casting also adds another actor of African heritage to one of Hollywood’s most culturally significant film franchises, continuing Marvel’s tradition of celebrating African stories and talent through the Black Panther universe.
Speaking at Comic-Con, an emotional Jonsson thanked Ryan Coogler, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige and the cast, saying he was honoured to join the franchise and hoped audiences would allow his performance to speak for itself.
