
Before George Osodo wrote a single line of code for NovaFleet, he ran a fleet himself. That experience gave him a firsthand understanding of what it feels like when visibility fails; not of where vehicles are, but of whether drivers are paying, whether documents are expiring, whether the money moving through the business reflects the vehicles moving through the city.
“Even lacking visibility into one critical area could have a significant impact on the entire business,” he says. That realisation became the founding argument for NovaFleet: that Africa’s fleet problem was never primarily a transportation problem. It was an operational intelligence problem.
What the Industry Got Wrong From the Start

Most fleet technology, Osodo argues, has been built around the wrong question. The industry defaulted to location: where is the vehicle? Fleet owners, it turns out, care about something far broader. They need to collect payments, manage drivers, maintain compliance, and monitor vehicle performance, and all of those things are connected. Payments affect driver performance. Compliance affects whether a vehicle is even operational. Driver behaviour affects costs, revenue, and the condition of an asset. GPS tells you where the vehicle is, not whether the business is working.
“Fleet management is not primarily a vehicle-tracking problem,” he says. “The deeper opportunity is to understand how the money and operational decisions flow through the business, and build technology around those realities.” Payments, in Osodo’s model, cannot sit outside the operational workflow. They have to be central to it, because a missed payment is not just a financial event. It signals something about the driver, the vehicle, the route, and the health of the business as a whole.

Building Around What Operators Already Know
One of NovaFleet’s most deliberate design decisions is what it does not ask of its users. Where most enterprise software demands that operators learn new ways of working, Osodo and his team of industry insiders who have operated fleets themselves took a different position: understand the workflows operators already know, then build technology around them.
“The goal is not to make people change everything they do,” he says. “It is to give them better tools to do what they already do, with greater visibility, efficiency, and control.” By digitising and simplifying existing workflows rather than replacing them, NovaFleet reduces the friction that typically kills enterprise software adoption in operationally complex sectors.
Why Digital Transformation in Transport Moved Slowly
Africa’s transport sector is one of the continent’s largest economic pillars, yet many businesses still run critical operations through spreadsheets and manual processes. Osodo’s diagnosis is direct: the continent’s strongest technology talent has historically looked outward, building products for global markets rather than solving structural inefficiencies at home.
“Nobody understands the nuances of our industries better than the people who operate within them,” he says. “We have to build these solutions ourselves.” The opportunity, he argues, is not small. Transport and logistics are fundamental to how African economies function, and purpose-built technology designed around local realities, rather than adapted from tools built elsewhere, is still largely missing.
Where AI Fits and Where It Does Not

Osodo is measured about what artificial intelligence should and should not do in fleet operations. At one level, AI has clear and immediate applications: customer support, internal staff queries, and routine issue resolution handled faster and more consistently than a person could manage manually. But those, he says, are the surface layer. He is most interested in a harder problem: decision-making.
As NovaFleet connects more data points across a fleet business, AI can analyse those signals faster than any human could manually; identifying risks earlier, recommending the right actions, and automating decisions where confidence is high enough, so operators can focus on the ones that genuinely require human judgment.
Success, on this measure, is not the number of features shipped. It is whether fleet owners are running healthier, more profitable businesses, and whether drivers are accessing opportunities faster through more transparent hiring processes. Both groups matter in Osodo’s definition of value, and both are tracked.
Today vs. Tomorrow: Holding Both at Once
Running a product company at the intersection of operational urgency and long-term vision requires a discipline that Osodo describes with unusual candour. Some releases at NovaFleet are built to solve what customers are struggling with today. Others are built to move the platform and the industry forward. These are not opposing forces, he argues, but they do require different thinking.
“The best innovation starts with understanding what already works for the customer and then finding better ways to improve and build around it,” he says. That philosophy, start with what is real, then go further, runs through everything NovaFleet builds.

The Larger Vision
Africa is one of the fastest-growing regions in the world, with a young, expanding population driving increasing demand for the movement of people and goods. Osodo sees NovaFleet’s long-term role clearly: not as a fleet management tool, but as part of the operating infrastructure that powers that movement.
The thesis is that fleet and logistics businesses should be understood as businesses built around the movement of money, assets, and people simultaneously, and that payments become far more powerful when connected to telematics, compliance, driver management, and operational intelligence in one place. Separate systems, he argues, do not reflect how these businesses actually work.
In ten years, Osodo’s measure of success is not market share. It is whether moving people and goods across Africa has become more efficient, more transparent, and more economically sustainable. “If we succeed,” he says, “our contribution will go beyond fleet management. We will have helped strengthen part of the infrastructure that keeps the African economy moving.”
