From Medicine to Mission: The Birth of Flying Doctors Nigeria

How Dr. Ola Orekunrin Brown Is Transforming Healthcare and Investment Across Africa

Dr. Ola Brown studied Medicine and Surgery at Hull York Medical School in the United Kingdom. While working in acute medicine, she lost a family member who couldn’t access air ambulance care in time. That tragedy became her motivation to ensure no one else suffered a similar fate.

In 2007, she founded Flying Doctors Nigeria (FDN) — West Africa’s first indigenous air ambulance and urgent medical transport service. The company provides life-saving emergency transport and healthcare logistics across Nigeria and beyond.

Today, Flying Doctors offers a range of services: emergency response, clinic and hospital management, medical equipment supply, and health consultancy. With operations reaching over 47 African countries and hundreds of international clients, the company has redefined what’s possible in African emergency medicine. It has handled thousands of air and ground medical evacuations, bringing healthcare access to oil fields, remote communities, and urban centers alike.

Flying Doctors has also expanded into health infrastructure and logistics, providing solutions for governments, corporations, and health institutions, proving that healthcare innovation in Africa can be both local and world-class.

From Emergencies to Enterprise: Founding Healthcap Africa

Dr. Brown soon realized that beyond emergency response, Africa’s healthcare challenge was systemic,  rooted in inadequate infrastructure and limited access to funding. To solve that, she founded Healthcap Africa, a pan-African investment firm focused on improving health outcomes through finance and innovation.

Healthcap Africa invests in sectors such as hospitals, pharmaceuticals, diagnostics, clean water, renewable energy, and health technology. The firm operates two arms: one dedicated to infrastructure projects and another focused on venture and growth-stage investments in high-impact startups.

Under Dr. Brown’s leadership, Healthcap has invested in and supported dozens of African startups in healthcare and fintech, helping them scale and attract significant follow-on funding. Its growing portfolio reflects her belief that sustainable healthcare begins with strong financial systems and innovation-driven economies.

Healthcap also builds partnerships with local and international organizations to fund clean energy for hospitals, expand diagnostic access, and strengthen the healthcare value chain. Its long-term goal is to impact the lives of over two billion Africans by creating a healthier, wealthier continent.
