D’Tigers Edge Guinea to Reach Second Round of 2027 FIBA World Cup Qualifiers

by REFINED

Nigeria’s senior men’s basketball team, D’Tigers, have booked their place in the second round of the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup African Qualifiers after a dramatic 80-79 victory over previously unbeaten Guinea in Luanda, Angola.

Just a day after defeating Tunisia 84-81, the Nigerian side produced another resilient performance, overturning late pressure from Guinea to claim back-to-back wins and revive their World Cup qualification campaign.

The victory not only ended Guinea’s perfect run in the qualifiers but also confirmed Nigeria’s progression to the next phase as the team continues its quest to return to the global basketball stage for the first time since the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

D’Tigers Dig Deep to Secure Another Crucial Victory

Nigeria came into the contest knowing the stakes could hardly be higher. With qualification hanging in the balance, the D’Tigers started brightly, bringing energy on both ends of the floor and disrupting Guinea’s rhythm from the opening minutes.

Their aggressive defence forced four turnovers within the first three minutes, allowing Nigeria to build momentum early. Although Guinea responded strongly, the Nigerians maintained their composure to head into halftime with a 46-40 advantage.

The second half presented a different challenge.

Guinea, who had won all four of their previous qualifying games, increased the intensity and finally grabbed their first lead after former NBA forward Sekou Doumbouya inspired a spirited comeback. A late three-pointer from Shannon Evans gave Guinea a 68-62 lead heading into the final quarter, leaving Nigeria with plenty of work to do.

Rather than panic, D’Tigers responded with determination. In the closing moments, Uche Iroegbu drove into the paint before finding Chimezie Metu for the decisive basket that restored Nigeria’s lead. Guinea had one final possession with just seconds remaining but could not convert, handing Nigeria a memorable one-point victory.

Agada Leads as Nigeria Overcomes Guinea’s Fightback

Caleb Agada once again proved why he remains one of Nigeria’s most dependable players on the international stage.

The guard finished with a game-high 22 points, three rebounds and four steals while making key plays at both ends of the court. Kaodirichi Akobundu-Ehiogu added 14 points, while Uche Iroegbu contributed 10 points, including the crucial assist for the game-winning basket.

For Guinea, Doumbouya led the scoring with 23 points, while Shannon Evans and Souleymane Jr. each finished with 18 points in a performance that nearly preserved their unbeaten record.

After the game, Nigeria assistant coach David Vanterpool praised the character shown by his players.

“They showed so much heart, resilience, determination and togetherness,” he said, while reminding everyone that “the job is not done” as the team continues to build towards qualification.

Agada also revealed that the players held a meeting following their victory over Tunisia, with the squad agreeing to approach every remaining game with greater energy and pride.

Second Round Beckons as Confidence Grows

Nigeria’s campaign looked uncertain just days ago, but consecutive victories over Tunisia and Guinea have completely changed the mood within the camp. The addition of experienced players, improved chemistry and stronger defensive execution have helped D’Tigers rediscover the identity that once made them one of Africa’s leading basketball nations.

With qualification to the second round now secured, attention turns to maintaining the momentum and preparing for even tougher challenges ahead.

If Nigeria can continue showing the resilience displayed against Tunisia and Guinea, hopes of returning to the FIBA Basketball World Cup remain very much alive.
