Ese Brume Delivers Nigeria’s First Medal in Tokyo!

Nigeria has its first medal in the ongoing Tokyo Olympic Games, thanks to the outstanding long jump champ, Ese Brume. She claimed a bronze medal after finishing third in the women’s long jump event.

Brume leapt 6.97 metres with her first jump to claim bronze behind second-placed Brittany Reece of the United States and Malaika Mihambo of Germany.

United States’ Brittany Reece got a silver medal while Germany’s  Malaika Mihambo got the gold medal.

This is Nigeria’s first track and field medal at the Olympics since 2008 when Blessing Okagbare won a silver medal in Beijing.

It also makes the long jump the first individual event to give Nigeria three medals at the Olympics with Chioma Ajunwa’s gold at the Atlanta ‘96 Olympics, Blessing Okagbare’s silver from 2008 and Brume’s bronze.

The 25-year-old Previously won bronze at the 2019 World Championships in Doha.

Having jumped a distance of 7.17m at the Chula Vista Festival in California in May, Ese had broken Chioma Ajunwa’s long-standing 7.12m record.

Brume’s jump was the World Lead going into the Olympics. She was the only Nigerian athlete who reached the final of her event at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, where she placed fifth with a leap of 6.81m.
