Here’s what we know about Yemi Cardoso, the newly appointed governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria
President Bola Tinubu recently nominated Yemi Cardoso as the new Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria.
Yemi Cardoso is to serve as the governor of the country’s apex bank for five years at the first instance pending his confirmation by the Senate.
Over the course of his illustrious career, Cardoso has served in the public and private sectors as a leader with prominent roles.

- He is from Lagos State.
- His father, Felix Bankole Cardoso, was the first indigenous Accountant-General of the Federation of Nigeria in 1963.
- He attended Corona School Ikoyi and St. Gregory’s College in Lagos for his primary and secondary education respectively.
- He completed a bachelor’s degree in Managerial and Administrative Studies from Aston University Birmingham, England, in 1980.
- He completed a master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard Kennedy School, Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA in 2005 as a Mason Fellow.
- He was the first Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget in Lagos State when President Bola Tinubu was the governor of the state.
- He is the Founder of Africa Institute for Leadership and Public Administration (AILPA), an organization which focuses on promoting private-public partnerships.
- Cardoso is a member of the Nigerian National Advisory Board on impact investing and serves on the advisory board of Lagos Business School.
