Tobi Amusan is the First Nigerian to Win Diamond League
Tobi Amusan made history on Thursday, 9th of September 2021 when she won the 100m women’s hurdles at the ongoing Women Diamond League in Zurich, setting a new African Record and Personal Best of 12.42 seconds, and breaking Glory Alozie’s 23-year African record.
The track and field athlete is the first Nigerian to win a Diamond League trophy.
Glory Anozie previously set an African record of 12.44 seconds in Monaco, on the 8th of August 1998, repeating the record two other times in Brussels 20 days later and at the World Championships on the 28th of August 1999, in Seville, Spain.
Tobi Amusan placed first ahead of Dutch Nadine Visser, who ran a National Record and Personal Best in a time of 12.51 seconds to emerge second. 2020 Tokyo Olympics bronze medalist, Megan Tapper from Jamaica placed third in 12.55 seconds.
Tobi Amusan recently won the women’s 100m hurdles at the Kamila Skolimowska meet in Chorzow, Poland. The 2018 Commonwealth Games gold medalist emerged victorious at the Stadion Slaski in 12.64 seconds (0.1), ahead of Megan Tapper who ran 12.75 seconds and USA’s Christina Clemons, third in 12.92 seconds.
Amusan also won the Citius Meeting in 12.80 seconds in Bern, Switzerland on the 21st of August 2021 and placed fourth at the Paris Diamond League seven days later.
Amusan is a 2019 African champion and a two-time African Games champion.
