Nigeria’s young tech talents have once again shown that innovation knows no boundaries. At the 10th Huawei ICT Competition Global Finals held in Shenzhen, China, Nigerian students delivered an outstanding performance, bringing home multiple awards and setting new records in one of the world’s biggest technology competitions.
The global event, which took place from June 2 to June 5 under the theme “Connection, Glory, Future”, attracted more than 201,000 students from over 100 countries and regions. More than 6,000 Nigerian students participated in the early stages of the competition, with only the best advancing to the international finals.
After months of rigorous national and regional qualifiers, five Nigerian teams made it to China, representing institutions including Ahmadu Bello University, the University of Lagos, the University of Port Harcourt, the Federal University of Technology Minna, Igbinedion University, and Nasarawa State University.
Their performance did not just earn medals. It placed Nigeria firmly among the world’s leading emerging technology hubs.

Record-Breaking Wins Put Nigeria in the Spotlight
The Nigerian contingent returned with an impressive haul of awards. The teams secured two Grand Prizes in the Innovation and Network categories, two First Prizes in the Cloud Track, and a Second Prize in the Computing category.
Perhaps even more remarkable was another record Nigeria set during the competition. The country became the first in the history of the Huawei ICT Competition to produce two all-female teams that both won Grand Prizes.
The achievement highlights the growing participation of Nigerian women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, while challenging long-held stereotypes about gender and technology careers.
Adding to the significance of the moment, Nigeria’s Consul-General in Guangzhou, Ambassador Mairo Musa Abbas, personally presented the Grand Prize trophies to the winning teams. The gesture turned the awards ceremony into a proud national celebration and underscored the importance of investing in young innovators.
One of the biggest attractions of the competition was the Nigerian Innovation Team’s project, Paravision. The artificial intelligence-powered healthcare solution aims to improve the diagnosis and treatment of malaria and intestinal parasites, two health challenges that continue to affect millions of people across Africa.
Judges praised the project for combining technical excellence with practical impact, proving that technology can play a critical role in solving everyday problems.

What This Victory Means for Nigeria’s Digital Future
The success of the Nigerian students goes beyond winning trophies. It reflects years of growing investment in digital education, coding programmes, artificial intelligence, and university-industry partnerships across the country.
As technology reshapes industries worldwide, competitions like the Huawei ICT Challenge give students the opportunity to test their skills against global standards while building solutions for real-world issues.
The strong showing also sends an encouraging message to young Nigerians who dream of careers in technology. From healthcare innovation to cloud computing and network engineering, the country’s next generation of tech leaders is already making an impact on the international stage.
For many observers, the success story is particularly inspiring because it demonstrates that Nigerian students can compete with some of the brightest minds from around the world when given access to quality training and opportunities.
The historic performance in Shenzhen adds another chapter to Nigeria’s growing reputation for producing talented innovators and problem-solvers who are shaping the future of technology.
As artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and digital infrastructure continue to transform economies, Nigeria’s young innovators have shown that they are ready to contribute not only to the country’s development but also to the global technology ecosystem.
