A Nigerian adventurer and humanitarian, Captain Olatunji Emmanuel Okedeyi, is turning a personal challenge into a global cause as he cycles from London to Lagos to raise awareness and funds for the eradication of polio.

The ambitious expedition, tagged “London to Lagos: Two Wheels, One Mission to End Polio“, has already taken him across several cities in Europe and North Africa. Seven days into the journey, Okedeyi is currently travelling through Morocco and is expected to reach the Mauritanian border as he continues toward Nigeria.

The campaign combines endurance, advocacy, and fundraising in a bid to support vaccination efforts and keep attention focused on a disease that health experts believe can be completely eliminated.

A Journey Driven by Purpose

Okedeyi’s motivation goes beyond the thrill of adventure. Growing up in a family of healthcare professionals shaped his belief that access to healthcare is a basic human right and that prevention remains one of the most powerful tools in medicine. According to him, the ride is his contribution to the global effort to eliminate polio once and for all.

Over the past week, he has cycled through major locations including Paris, San Sebastián, Madrid, Málaga, Marrakesh, Casablanca, Agadir, Laayoun and Dakhla. The journey covers thousands of kilometres and presents a range of challenges, from changing weather conditions to difficult terrain.

Despite the physical demands, Okedeyi remains focused on the larger goal of encouraging support for vaccination programmes and protecting the progress already made against polio worldwide.

The Kilometre Club Initiative

To help raise funds, Okedeyi launched an initiative known as the “Kilometre Club”. The concept allows individuals, businesses and organisations to sponsor sections of the journey.

Under the initiative, every £10 donated sponsors one kilometre of the route between London and Lagos. Funds generated from the campaign will support vaccination programmes, cold-chain systems used to preserve vaccines, and rehabilitation services such as physical therapy and mobility aids for people affected by the disease.

Among the supporters backing the mission is Prince Yinka Afonja, Chief Executive Officer of Ace Mall, who has joined efforts to help drive awareness and fundraising for the campaign.

The cyclist hopes the initiative will encourage more people to contribute, regardless of the size of their donation.

Nigeria achieved a major public health milestone in 2020 when it was declared free of wild poliovirus. However, health experts continue to stress the importance of maintaining immunisation programmes to prevent any resurgence.

For Okedeyi, the ride represents more than a fundraising campaign. It is also a symbolic connection between his life in the United Kingdom and his Nigerian roots, while promoting a message of service, resilience and collective responsibility.

With more than 10,000 kilometres expected to be covered before reaching Lagos, the journey is attracting attention not only for its scale but also for its purpose.

As he pedals closer to home, Okedeyi hopes his mission will inspire individuals, companies and philanthropists to support the vision of a world where polio exists only in history books.
