Team Nigeria continued its impressive showing at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow with another memorable day on the track and in the field, highlighted by Chukwuebuka Enekwechi’s historic gold medal, Tobi Amusan’s bronze finish in the women’s 100m hurdles, and a record-breaking performance from the mixed 4x400m relay team.
The latest results further strengthened Nigeria’s position as one of Africa’s standout nations at the Games, with athletes delivering medals and record performances across multiple events.
Enekwechi Wins Historic Shot Put Gold
Chukwuebuka Enekwechi etched his name into the history books after becoming the first Nigerian to win the Commonwealth Games men’s shot put title.
The African record holder produced a superb fifth-round throw of 21.07 metres, narrowly defeating New Zealand’s Tom Walsh, who settled for silver with 21.03m. England’s Scott Lincoln claimed bronze with 20.99m.
Enekwechi had already signalled his intentions during the qualification round, needing only one throw of 20.03m to secure automatic qualification for the final. He returned with confidence and held off two experienced rivals to secure Nigeria’s eighth gold medal of the Games.
His triumph adds to an already impressive medal haul for Team Nigeria, whose success has largely been powered by outstanding performances in athletics, para powerlifting and weightlifting.

Amusan Settles for Bronze as Title Streak Ends
Nigeria’s sprint hurdles star Tobi Amusan also reached the podium but had to settle for bronze in the women’s 100m hurdles final.
The 29-year-old, who won Commonwealth titles at Gold Coast 2018 and Birmingham 2022, was hoping to become the first woman to win the event three consecutive times.
Amusan crossed the finish line in 12.60 seconds, finishing behind Bahamas’ Devynne Charlton, who claimed gold in 12.33 seconds, while Jamaica’s Megan Simmonds secured silver in 12.41 seconds.
Although she fell short of another gold medal, Amusan added another Commonwealth medal to her decorated career and once again demonstrated her consistency on one of athletics’ biggest stages.

Nigeria’s Relay Team Sets New Games Record
There was more reason for celebration as Nigeria’s mixed 4x400m relay team produced a record-breaking performance during the heats.
The quartet of Edidiong Udo, Esther Joseph, Samuel Ogazi and Patience Okon-George stormed to victory in 3:14.58, establishing the first-ever Commonwealth Games record in the event, which is making its debut at the competition.
Australia finished second in 3:15.21, but Nigeria’s efficient baton exchanges and strong finishing pace ensured they comfortably topped the heat.
The record-breaking run sends Team Nigeria into the final as one of the strongest contenders for the inaugural mixed 4x400m relay gold medal.
Elsewhere, Samuel Ogazi, Edidiong Udo and Ella Onojuvwevwo also booked places in their respective 400m finals, while javelin thrower Chinecherem Prosper Nnamdi qualified for the men’s final, giving Nigeria more opportunities to add to its growing medal tally.
