Yekemi Otaru Appointed Chancellor-Elect of the University of the West of Scotland
Nigerian entrepreneur, Yekemi Otaru has been appointed as Chancellor-elect of the University of the West of Scotland. This was disclosed in a statement on the university’s website.
Yekemi Otaru will assume her new role as the university’s Chancellor on September 1, 2021, succeeding Dame Elish Angiolini. As Chancellor, she will hold formal powers to confer degrees, diplomas and other academic distinctions while representing the university at key events.
Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Craig Mahoney is excited that “Yekemi’s values very much align with those of UWS, from her passion for advancing equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) to her commitment to enterprise.” He is further thrilled that her appointment reflects the university’s strategic mission to make a positive difference in wider society.
The newly appointed holds a bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Benin, master’s in Petroleum Engineering jointly from Institut Francais du Petrole (IFP) and the University of Port Harcourt, and an MBA from Henley Business School, UK.
Yekemi is the Co-Founder and Executive Director of Doqaru Limited, a leading sales and marketing consultancy based in Aberdeen, Scotland. She is an inspiring entrepreneur renowned for her passionate commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion. She is also dedicated to supporting women in business and providing mentorship opportunities for business owners in low-and-middle-income countries.

A marketing expert, she has worked with startups, small and medium enterprises as well as large corporate organizations in the Software, IT, Engineering, Business Support, Recruitment and Oil and Gas sectors. She worked as a Petroleum Engineer at Total, Software Product Manager at Schlumberger and Product Manager at GE Oil and Gas, all in the UK.
Yekemi sits on the board of Interface, a company connecting a wide range of organizations from national and international industries to Scotland’s universities, research institutes and colleges, matching them with world-leading academic expertise to help them grow.
Yekemi has received several accolades for her works in the entrepreneurial scene including being featured as one of the 40 Under 40 Business Innovators by Scottish Business News.
