Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi has achieved a remarkable milestone in his career, becoming the Nigerian player with the most appearances in the English Premier League.
The 29-year-old Fulham star set the record on Saturday after featuring in Fulham’s 1–0 loss to his former club, Arsenal. With that appearance, Iwobi reached 299 Premier League games, surpassing the long-standing record held by former Newcastle United striker Shola Ameobi, who made 298 appearances.
From Arsenal Academy to Record Breaker
Iwobi’s journey to this milestone has been one of growth, consistency, and endurance. Born in Lagos but raised in London, he joined Arsenal’s academy as a young boy and made his senior debut for the Gunners in 2015. His early years were marked by technical flair, intelligence on the ball, and a calmness beyond his age — qualities that quickly earned him a place in the first team.
During his time at Arsenal, Iwobi made over 100 Premier League appearances, contributing vital goals and assists before transferring to Everton in 2019. At Goodison Park, he developed into a more versatile and mature player, adapting to different roles under several managers. In 2023, he joined Fulham, where he has since become one of the club’s most consistent and dependable performers, known for his creativity, hard work, and professionalism.

Surpassing Legends
By reaching 299 appearances, Iwobi has moved past some of the biggest names in Nigerian football history. Behind him on the all-time Premier League appearance chart are:
- Shola Ameobi – 298 appearances
- Nwankwo Kanu – 273
- Yakubu Aiyegbeni – 252
- John Mikel Obi – 249
Iwobi’s achievement underscores his longevity and resilience in one of the toughest football leagues in the world. His proud father, Chuka Iwobi, shared his excitement in a post on social media, celebrating his son’s dedication and growth:
“Your best is still to come,” he wrote, marking the historic moment.
A Veteran Still Going Strong

Iwobi has now spent close to a decade in the Premier League, a rare feat for any African player. Across his career with Arsenal, Everton, and Fulham, he has built a reputation as a reliable team player with technical excellence and tactical intelligence.
At Fulham, he has made 85 appearances, scoring 16 goals and providing 10 assists, cementing his place as a key figure under Marco Silva.
Despite Fulham’s defeat to Arsenal, the milestone adds another highlight to a stellar year for the midfielder, who also played a vital role in helping Nigeria qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup playoffs during the international break.

Eyes on 300 and Beyond
Iwobi is expected to make his 300th Premier League appearance when Fulham travel to face Newcastle United next weekend — a fitting stage to celebrate a record-breaking career.
As he continues to make history, Iwobi joins the ranks of African players whose careers have left an indelible mark on the Premier League, following in the footsteps of icons like Didier Drogba, Yaya Touré, and Kanu Nwankwo.
Through perseverance, discipline, and talent, Alex Iwobi has not only carried the Nigerian flag high in England but also solidified his place as one of the most enduring Super Eagles stars of his generation.
