
Nigeria’s D’Tigress began their FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup qualifying campaign in emphatic fashion on Wednesday, defeating Colombia 70–37 at the Astroballe Arena in Villeurbanne, France.
The African champions produced a commanding performance to secure victory in what was the first-ever meeting between both nations. Despite a competitive first half, Nigeria’s superior depth, defensive intensity, and experience eventually proved too much for their South American opponents.
Led by a balanced scoring display and a dominant defensive effort in the second half, the Nigerian side extended their strong run under head coach Rena Wakama while continuing preparations for the 2026 Women’s World Cup in Berlin.

Strong Second Half Seals Convincing Victory
Nigeria started the game with energy and purpose, opening the scoring early through Promise Amukamara, who converted a free throw before adding a layup to give the team early momentum.Colombia responded with a three-pointer from Mabel Martinez, but D’Tigress quickly regained control and closed the first quarter with an 18–12 lead.
The second quarter proved more competitive as Colombia fought to stay in the contest. The South Americans improved their offensive rhythm and managed to cut into Nigeria’s lead before halftime. However, the African champions still held a narrow 34–29 advantage at the break.
The game turned decisively in the third quarter.Nigeria raised their defensive intensity, limiting Colombia to just five points in the period while extending their lead significantly. Their dominance on both ends of the court saw them enter the final quarter with a comfortable 53–34 advantage.
D’Tigress continued to control the pace in the fourth quarter, adding 17 more points while restricting Colombia to only three. The strong finish ensured a convincing 33-point victory for Wakama’s side.

Okonkwo, Macaulay Lead Balanced Nigerian Attack

Several players delivered impressive performances for Nigeria in the dominant win.Amy Okonkwo led the scoring with 18 points and added six rebounds, providing an offensive spark throughout the contest. Nicole Enabosi and Victoria Macaulay also made important contributions, each scoring 12 points.
Victoria Macaulay’s all-around display stood out, as she also recorded four rebounds and two blocks to earn Player of the Game honours. Elizabeth Balogun added 11 points and five rebounds, while veteran guard Ezinne Kalu controlled the tempo with five assists.
Nigeria’s teamwork was evident throughout the game. The team dominated the rebounding battle, moved the ball effectively, and maintained strong defensive discipline, particularly in the second half where Colombia struggled to find scoring opportunities.
The victory also marks another milestone for head coach Rena Wakama, who continues to build momentum with the national team since taking charge in 2023.
Although Nigeria had already secured qualification for the 2026 Women’s World Cup by winning the 2025 FIBA AfroBasket, the tournament in France provides valuable preparation against strong international opposition.
D’Tigress will now shift focus to their next fixture as they continue their five-game schedule in the tournament.
