Nigerian filmmaker and Guinness World Record holder Nora Awolowo has been named a brand ambassador for Canon, adding a major global imaging partnership to a year already marked by a historic achievement in Nollywood.
Canon announced Awolowo as its newest ambassador days after the filmmaker was part of the team behind Black Market, the Nollywood crime thriller that set a Guinness World Record for the largest attendance at a film screening in a single location.
The appointment places Awolowo in a new role focused not only on her own creative work but also on supporting other visual storytellers across Africa.

From a Record-Breaking Screening to a Global Partnership

Awolowo’s Canon appointment follows the record-breaking Black Market screening held at Tafawa Balewa Square in Lagos on September 26.
The event drew a reported 51,258 viewers who stayed from the beginning to the end of the film, according to the supplied industry report. Guinness World Records recognised the achievement as the largest attendance at a film screening in a single location.
The figure surpassed the previous record of 43,624 people, set in 2015 when Felix Manalo was screened at the Philippine Arena in the Philippines.
The screening had been planned as a 50,000-person record attempt, with Rixel Studios, FilmOne Studios, Signet Ring Studios and Switch Visuals Production involved in the project.
While the wider event reportedly attracted about 64,000 people, Guinness World Records used the number of viewers who remained throughout the entire film to determine the qualifying attendance.
Awolowo is listed as a record holder alongside Damilola Osikoya and Switch Visual Limited.
The achievement gave Black Market an unusual place in Nollywood history, but it has also brought renewed attention to the filmmakers and creative professionals behind the project.

What the Canon Ambassadorship Will Involve

As a Canon ambassador, Awolowo is expected to work with the imaging company on initiatives that support visual creativity across the continent.
Her role will include championing imaging technology, mentoring emerging visual creators and helping empower a new generation of African storytellers.
For a filmmaker whose work spans cinematography, directing and producing, the partnership also connects directly with the technical side of filmmaking.
Awolowo expressed her appreciation for the journey that led to the appointment, reflecting on her relationship with Canon and the role its equipment has played in her career.
“From my first Canon to this moment. What a journey,” she said.
The appointment therefore extends beyond a conventional celebrity endorsement. It places Awolowo in a position to represent a global imaging brand while contributing to conversations around how African creators use visual technology to tell their stories.

Building a Career Across African Visual Storytelling

The Guinness World Record is only one part of Awolowo’s career.
She founded Rixel Studios and has built experience across cinematography, directing and producing, with her work including documentary and narrative projects.
In 2025, she was recognised as the youngest Nigerian filmmaker to take a film past the ₦100 million box-office mark with Red Circle, where she worked as producer and cinematographer, according to the supplied industry report.
Her cinematography work has also earned industry recognition. She was nominated for Best Cinematography at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards for Lisabi: The Uprising, while her documentary Nigeria: The Debut, commissioned by FIFA, won Best Documentary at the awards in 2023.
Her earlier documentary projects include Life at the Bay, Baby Blues, Symphonies, David and All Lives Matter.
The Canon partnership now adds another dimension to that career, linking Awolowo’s filmmaking experience with a broader opportunity to support emerging creators. For Nollywood and Africa’s wider creative industry, the appointment also reflects the growing visibility of filmmakers working across production, cinematography and visual storytelling.
After helping create a film screening that drew tens of thousands of people into one location, Awolowo is entering her next chapter with a global imaging brand and a role that could put her closer to the next generation of African visual storytellers.
