Despite the introduction of several trends, “Filà” which means cap in Yoruba Language continues to be in style and no owambe party goes without Nigerian men from different backgrounds rocking a Filà.

Filà could be hand-made or sewn from many clothing materials such as Aso-Oke, Damask, Adire, Velvet, Cotton etc., and there are different types of Filà in Yorubaland  such as Abeti-aja, Gobi, Kufi and Awolowo Cap.

Amongst the Yoruba tribe, some professions have their own special type of cap. Farmers for instance wear Gberi-agbe, while hunters wear Gberi-ode.

1.When Filà is worn to the right, it indicates that the wearer is single.

2. Wearing the Filà to the left shows that the wearer is married.

3. When the youths tilt theirs to the front, it indicates that they will have a glorious future or that the future is theirs.

4. Elderly ones tilt theirs to the back showing that they have had their time.

5. In a situation where kings, princes or people of higher cadre in Yoruba land wear  their caps to the right or left, their followers must wear theirs to the opposite side as a sign of respect.

6. A groom-to-be must wear his cap to the direction of his fiancé’s house whenever he is within the neighborhood to keep other suitors away.
