Nigerian Institute of Social and Economic Research (NISER)

The Nigerian Institute of Social and Economic Research (NISER) is a public research institute established by the Federal Government in 1960.

With its Head office in Ibadan, NISER’s products and activities include publications of conference proceedings and research findings, organizing training workshops, and seminars.

NISER carries out independent research on social and economic issues and provides consultative service to the government based on research findings. NISER’s reach is nationwide as NISER’s researchers have worked in every state and local government in Nigeria.

Internationally, NISER’s research involves comparative studies on Africa’s social and economic transformation; frameworks for economic growth and competitiveness; and the analysis of development policies aimed at improving Africa’s participation in the global economy.

NISER is headed by Dr Gbadebo-Smith, as the Director-General of the institute. Dr Gbadebo-Smith is a graduate of Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government.  He has conducted research on various policy issues including governance, health, and food chain analysis.  He has also worked as an independent consultant for Lagos state, DFID, World Bank, and other international organizations.

With a vision to be a world class think tank in the area of social and economic policy research, NISER’s objectives include:

* Provide consultancy services to the Federal and State Governments, their agencies and organisations, in the field of economic and social development

* Conduct research into the economic and social problems of the country with a view to the applications of the results thereof

* Organise seminars and conferences on problems of economic and social development in the country, whether on its own accounts or on behalf of the government of Nigeria or their agencies

* Cooperate with Nigerian universities, research institutes and other institutions in the mobilisation of the country’s research potential for the task of national development and dissemination of research findings for the use of policymakers at all levels.

NISER is divided into three main departments: Economic Policy Research Department, Social and Governance Policy Research Department, and Surveillance and Forecasting Department.
