Nigerian-born legal scholar Dr Ibironke Odumosu-Ayanu has been appointed dean of the College of Law at the University of Saskatchewan in Canada, marking a new chapter in a nearly two-decade academic career at the institution.
Odumosu-Ayanu, who currently serves as the college’s associate dean of research and graduate studies, will begin a five-year term as dean on October 1, 2026. She has been a member of the University of Saskatchewan College of Law since 2008.
Her appointment was announced by Patti McDougall, interim provost and vice-president, academic at the University of Saskatchewan. McDougall described Odumosu-Ayanu as an academic with a strong record in research, teaching and collaborative leadership.
She will succeed Martin Phillipson, who completed two five-year terms as dean before beginning administrative leave in July. Professor Doug Surtees, who has been serving as interim dean, will continue in the position until Odumosu-Ayanu takes over.

From Lagos to Saskatchewan
Odumosu-Ayanu’s journey to one of Canada’s leading law schools began in Lagos, where she developed an early love for reading and writing.
Although she initially considered a future in communications, encouragement from her teachers and support from her parents led her towards law. She studied at the University of Lagos, earning her Bachelor of Laws degree before setting her sights on postgraduate study abroad.
England was initially her preferred destination, but the University of Calgary’s strength in natural resources, energy and environmental law changed her plans. She received funding to pursue a Master of Laws in Canada.
Her original plan was to return to Nigeria after completing the degree and practise law. Instead, she continued her academic journey at the University of British Columbia, where she earned a PhD.
That decision eventually led her into academia. In 2008, she joined the University of Saskatchewan College of Law, where she has spent nearly two decades teaching, researching and mentoring students.

A Career Shaped by Research and Teaching
Odumosu-Ayanu’s research sits at the intersection of business and human rights, international investment law and natural resource governance. Her work examines how legal and investment decisions can affect local communities.
Beyond research, she has built a reputation for teaching and academic mentorship. Her achievements include the Provost’s College Award for Outstanding Teaching in 2012 and the USask InterD Advisor Award in 2026.
As dean, she will be responsible for building on the college’s reputation for legal education and research while strengthening its work in Indigenous legal scholarship and engagement with communities in Canada and around the world.
Her appointment reflects a remarkable journey from a young law student in Lagos to a senior academic leader in Canada. It is also a reminder of how far an academic career can take someone when curiosity, opportunity and a willingness to pursue an unexpected path come together.
