Nigerian artist Uzoma Dunkwu has added an Emmy Award to his growing list of creative achievements after winning for his character design work on Marvel Animation’s Eyes of Wakanda.
The Lagos-based visual development artist was recognised in the ‘Outstanding Individual Achievement in Animation’ category for character design on the episode Into the Lion’s Den. The Television Academy lists Dunkwu among the 2026 juried Emmy winners, alongside other animation professionals recognised for work on Genndy Tartakovsky’s Primal, The Mighty Nein and Star Wars: Visions.
The recognition places a Nigerian creative at the centre of one of the world’s biggest entertainment franchises, while also drawing attention to the growing contribution of African artists to international animation.

Uzoma Dunkwu Wins Emmy for Eyes of Wakanda
Dunkwu’s Emmy-winning work was created for Eyes of Wakanda, the Disney+ animated series from Marvel Animation that follows Wakandan warriors across different periods of history as they work to recover vibranium artefacts.
He received the award specifically for character design on Into the Lion’s Den, an episode involving a rogue Wakandan general known as the Lion. The Television Academy officially lists the episode and Dunkwu as the character designer behind the winning entry.
Dunkwu joined the production in August 2021 as an early concept artist. His work began with character ideation, including early designs for members of the Dora Milaje, before expanding across the series.
He later contributed to the development and refinement of several characters, including Noni, Old Noni, Kuda, Tafari, High Councilman Rakim, an 1885 Wakandan Queen, Lion Captain and other crowd characters. His designs helped shape the visual identity of characters appearing across the series.
The Emmy was awarded through the Television Academy’s juried process. Unlike competitive categories where members vote on a winner from a list of nominees, juried awards are assessed by panels of industry professionals who can select one or more recipients.
From Electrical Engineering to Marvel Animation
Dunkwu’s route into animation began outside the traditional art school pathway. He studied electrical and electronics engineering at the University of Benin before building his creative career through comics, illustration, concept art and animation.
That transition eventually led to opportunities with major international entertainment companies. His professional portfolio includes work connected to Marvel, Netflix and Disney, while his animation credits include Eyes of Wakanda and Iyanu: The Age of Wonders.
His Emmy is also not his first major recognition for Eyes of Wakanda. Dunkwu previously received a Concept Art Association award for animated-series character concept art for Noni, another character from the Marvel production. His own professional portfolio now identifies him as an Emmy and CAA Award-winning visual development artist, writer and director in animation.

A Nigerian Creative Career Built in Lagos
One of the most notable parts of Dunkwu’s story is that his international career has been built largely from Lagos.
His work on Eyes of Wakanda gave him an opportunity to contribute to a global franchise whose visual world is deeply connected to African history, culture and aesthetics. His character designs helped bring different periods and personalities within Wakanda to life while drawing from the broader African influences central to the series.
Following news of his Emmy, Dunkwu dedicated the achievement to emerging artists in Nigeria and across the Global South.
“This win is for the rising talents from Nigeria and the global south. We can compete on the world stage!” he said.
Beyond his studio work, Dunkwu also shares tutorials, courses and educational content to help aspiring artists develop their character design skills. His career therefore extends from creating for major international productions to helping other creatives find their own path into the industry.
