Asisat Oshoala Begins New Chapter in Saudi

Super Falcons striker Asisat Oshoala has sealed a permanent move to Saudi Women’s Premier League giants Al-Hilal, marking yet another milestone in her illustrious career. The 30-year-old joins from National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) side Bay FC, signing a two-year contract with the Riyadh-based outfit after completing medicals earlier this week.

The switch signals a return to the Middle East for Oshoala, who previously starred in China before conquering Europe with FC Barcelona Femeni. At Al-Hilal, she joins fellow Nigerians Ashleigh Plumptre and Francisca Ordega, further strengthening the Saudi league’s growing Nigerian contingent.

Club officials at Al-Hilal are banking on Oshoala’s wealth of experience and goal-scoring pedigree to boost their push for silverware, following a sixth-place finish in the 2024–25 campaign.

From Barcelona to Bay FC – and Beyond

Oshoala’s transfer comes just 18 months after she joined Bay FC ahead of their debut NWSL season. She instantly etched her name in club history, scoring their first-ever franchise goal on March 17, 2024, against Angel City. By the end of the season, she had notched seven goals in 38 appearances, becoming a crucial figure in the Bay Area team’s attack.

Her impact, however, went beyond goals. Bay FC’s sporting director, Matt Potter, praised Oshoala as “a world-class player and an even better person,” highlighting her leadership, professionalism, and positive influence on younger players.

Despite her strong start, the 2025 season brought challenges. Limited minutes and tactical adjustments in the physically demanding NWSL saw her role reduced. Head coach Albertin Montoya admitted that Oshoala struggled to fully adapt to the league’s defensive style, often finding herself coming off the bench.

Even so, her contributions remain etched in Bay FC’s early history, with the club acknowledging her importance in building its identity both on and off the pitch.

A Glittering Career That Continues to Inspire

Oshoala’s move to Al-Hilal adds yet another chapter to a career that has taken her from Ikorodu, Lagos, to some of the biggest stages in world football. She first broke out with Rivers Angels before playing in England with Liverpool and Arsenal, then shining in China with Dalian Quanjian.

It was at Barcelona Femeni that Oshoala cemented her global status. Over five seasons, she scored 107 goals in 149 matches, winning five Spanish league titles and two UEFA Women’s Champions League crowns. She also became the first African woman to be nominated for the Ballon d’Or Féminin, underlining her influence on the global stage.

On the international front, Oshoala has been just as impactful. A six-time African Women’s Player of the Year—her most recent coming in 2023—she helped Nigeria clinch its record 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title in Morocco. Despite reduced minutes at the 2024 WAFCON, her presence in the squad was key to guiding the Super Falcons to victory.

Her move to Saudi Arabia reflects not just the rising profile of the Saudi Women’s Premier League, but also Oshoala’s commitment to breaking barriers and continuing her influence in global football.

Nigerians in Saudi Women’s Football

Oshoala is not alone in this journey. Her Super Falcons teammates Ashleigh Plumptre and Francisca Ordega are already established figures in Saudi football, creating a core of Nigerian talent within the league. Together, they are helping to shine a light on African excellence in women’s football and inspiring a new generation of players back home.

For Al-Hilal, the arrival of Oshoala is both a statement signing and a show of intent. For Nigeria, it reinforces the nation’s reputation as a producer of world-class female footballers whose careers transcend continents
