How Lisa Folawiyo Turned Ankara Into a Global Luxury Statement

From Everyday Fabric to Global Luxury

Ankara has always been a bold, vibrant, and deeply West African fabric of identity and everyday expression. But for years, it was seen as ordinary, too familiar to be anything more than local fashion. Then came a designer who reimagined it.

The Beginning: Twelve Yards and a Vision

In 2005, Lisa Folawiyo started her brand in Lagos with just ₦20,000, twelve yards of Ankara, and motivation from her mother. With no formal training, but a restless desire for creativity, she set out to transform Ankara into a luxury statement. Her idea was to elevate traditional fabric with intricate hand embellishments, beads, sequins, and crystals crafted with painstaking detail.

That vision became Jewel by Lisa, later rebranded as Lisa Folawiyo, a label defined by heritage, craftsmanship, and global appeal. Every piece, handmade in Nigeria and sometimes requiring up to 240 hours of work, gave artisans sustainable opportunities while showcasing the richness of African design.

Breaking into the Global Stage

Her collections quickly moved beyond Lagos, appearing at fashion weeks in Johannesburg, London, New York, Paris, and Milan. Showrooms opened in Lagos and New York, and her designs found stockists across Nigeria, South Africa, the UK, and the US. From Vogue Italia to Harper’s Bazaar, the global press took notice, while stars like Lupita Nyong’o, Solange Knowles, Issa Rae, and Thandie Newton embraced her pieces on red carpets and magazine covers.
