Lookman Scores as Atlético Beat Man United: Champions League Round-Up

Ademola Lookman was among the standout performers on Tuesday night as Atlético Madrid defeated Manchester United 2-0 in the UEFA Champions League, while fellow Nigerian forward Victor Osimhen endured a difficult evening as Galatasaray lost 4-1 to Barcelona in Istanbul.

Lookman came off the bench to score in the 79th minute, sealing Atlético’s first victory in this season’s Champions League league phase. The result marked contrasting fortunes for Nigeria’s two forwards on a night that also featured convincing wins for Arsenal and Sporting CP, a dramatic draw for Bayern Munich and a seven-goal thriller involving Inter Milan.

Lookman Seals Atlético Victory, Osimhen Falls to Barcelona

Atlético made a flying start against Manchester United, taking the lead inside the opening minute. Alex Baena advanced beyond Diogo Dalot and squared the ball for Pablo Barrios, whose effort slipped past goalkeeper Ayden Heaven.

United improved as the match progressed but struggled to convert their opportunities. Bryan Mbeumo missed chances to equalise, while Bruno Fernandes came close after the break with an effort that went off target. Atlético also threatened, with Alejandro Grimaldo hitting the post from a free-kick.

Manchester United’s task became more difficult when defender Leny Yoro was sent off following a VAR review of his challenge on substitute Jonathan David. Lookman then capitalised on the opportunity to score Atlético’s second goal and secure the points.

In Istanbul, Osimhen’s Galatasaray suffered a different outcome against Barcelona. The Turkish side took the lead through Aleksey Batrakov’s deflected effort and briefly thought they had doubled their advantage, only for a goal involving Osimhen to be ruled out for offside after a VAR review.

Barcelona responded through João Cancelo shortly before half-time. Fermin López headed the visitors ahead in the 50th minute, before Anthony Gordon scored three minutes later. Substitute Karim Adeyemi added a fourth to complete an impressive comeback.

Arsenal continued their strong start to the competition with a 3-0 victory over Lille in London. Jurrien Timber broke the deadlock in the second half, before substitutes Bukayo Saka and Eberechi Eze added two more goals. Arsenal have now won their opening two league-phase matches.

Sporting CP also maintained their perfect record, defeating Lens 2-0. Luis Suárez opened the scoring and became the club’s outright leading scorer in the modern Champions League, before Issa Doumbia added a second to secure the victory.

Bayern Munich, however, were held to a 3-3 draw by Norwegian side Viking. Bayern recovered from a two-goal deficit to take the lead through Harry Kane’s brace and a Luis Díaz strike. Michael Olise was then sent off, and Herman Haugen scored late to earn Viking a valuable point.

Inter Milan suffered a surprise 4-3 defeat at home to Club Brugge. Nicolò Tresoldi scored a hat-trick for the visitors in an entertaining encounter, while Lautaro Martínez scored twice for Inter. Romeo Vermant’s goal proved decisive despite a late effort from Ange-Yoan Bonny.

Elsewhere, Sabah claimed their first-ever victory in the Champions League proper with a 2-0 win over Slavia Prague. Villarreal beat Napoli 3-1 after coming from behind, while Leipzig secured a narrow 1-0 victory over PSV.

What Comes Next?

The results have strengthened the early positions of teams such as Arsenal, Barcelona and Sporting CP, while others will need to respond in their upcoming fixtures. Atlético will face Stuttgart on 21 October, while Manchester United are scheduled to meet Como on the same date. Galatasaray will take on Lille as they seek their first win of the campaign.

For Nigerian fans, Lookman’s decisive contribution offered a bright moment in an otherwise mixed night for the country’s leading forwards in Europe.
