Team Nigeria once again proved its strength on the continental stage after securing a fourth consecutive gold medal in the women’s 4x100m relay at the 2026 African Senior Athletics Championships in Accra, Ghana.
The Nigerian quartet of Chigozie Rosemary, Jennifer Chukwuka Obi, Rosemary Chukwuma, and Miracle Ezechukwu stormed to victory with an impressive time of 42.94 seconds, finishing ahead of Liberia and host nation Ghana in Friday’s final.
The result extended Nigeria’s unbeaten run in the event since 2016 and further confirmed the country’s long-standing dominance in African women’s sprint relay competitions.
Even more remarkable was the fact that the team’s winning time also set a new championship record, making Nigeria the first country in the history of the competition to complete the race in under 43 seconds.

Young Stars Shine for Team Nigeria
One of the biggest talking points from the victory was the youthful energy inside the Nigerian team. Seventeen-year-old Miracle Ezechukwu delivered a composed anchor leg to seal the gold medal after receiving the baton from Rosemary Chukwuma, who had already won silver earlier in the women’s 100m final during the championships.
Reports from the competition also highlighted that some members of the relay team are still students. Miracle reportedly sat for her JAMB examination only weeks before travelling to Ghana, while another relay star, Rosemary Nwankwo, is still in secondary school.
That combination of youth and confidence has become one of the most exciting parts of Nigeria’s performance in Accra.
For many athletics fans, the relay victory felt like a glimpse into the future of Nigerian sprinting. The team not only defended its title successfully but also showed the depth of talent currently emerging in the country.
The women’s relay success continues a winning streak that began in Asaba in 2018 before extending through Mauritius in 2022, Douala in 2024, and now Accra in 2026.
Men’s Team Adds Silver to Nigeria’s Medal Haul

Nigeria’s men also delivered a strong performance in the 4x100m relay final, earning silver after a dramatic finish.
The quartet of Favour Ashe, James Taiwo Emmanuel, Tejiri Godwin, and Chidera Ezeakor clocked 38.70 seconds to finish second behind Côte d’Ivoire, while Ghana settled for bronze.
At one point, Nigeria appeared headed for third place before Chidera Ezeakor produced an impressive final stretch to overtake Ghana and push the team into silver-medal position.
The relay medals added to an already impressive championship outing for Team Nigeria, which has enjoyed success across several track and field events.
World record holder Tobi Amusan earlier claimed gold in the women’s 100m hurdles, while several other Nigerian athletes have reached the podium in Accra.
