African Athletics Championships 2026: Records, Relays and Rising Stars

The 2026 African Athletics Championships in Accra, Ghana, gave fans six days of elite competition, emotional victories and enough relay drama to keep group chats active for weeks. From sprint doubles to shocking upsets and historic relay wins, the continent’s best athletes turned the University of Ghana Stadium into one of the most exciting sporting venues in Africa this month.

For the first time, Ghana hosted the championships, and the atmosphere matched the occasion. Even heavy rain could not slow things down as athletes from across Africa produced standout moments that reminded everyone just how deep the continent’s talent pool has become.

Sprint Stars Took Centre Stage

The sprint events delivered some of the biggest headlines of the championships. Cameroon enjoyed a memorable week after Emmanuel Eseme stormed to gold in the men’s 100m with a time of 10.25 seconds, while compatriot Hervérge Kole Etame claimed the women’s title. Cameroon essentially looked at the 100m finals and said, “We’ll take both, thanks.”

Côte d’Ivoire then dominated the 200m events on the final day. Maboundou Koné won the women’s 200m title in 23.35 seconds, while Cheickna Traoré powered to victory in the men’s race with an impressive 20.31 seconds. The Ivorians also made history in the men’s 4x100m relay, winning their first-ever continental title with a national record time of 38.52 seconds.

Botswana’s Lee Eppie was another standout performer after winning the men’s 400m in 44.66 seconds, while South Africa’s Rogail Joseph took gold in the women’s 400m hurdles.

Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan once again proved why she remains one of Africa’s biggest athletics stars. The world record holder comfortably secured gold in the women’s 100m hurdles with a time of 12.83 seconds, leading Nigeria’s strong medal run in Accra.

Nigeria’s Relays Stole the Show

If there was one area where Team Nigeria truly stamped authority, it was the relay events.

Nigeria successfully defended the women’s 4x100m title for the fourth consecutive championships after Chigozie Rosemary, Jennifer Chukwuka Obi, Rosemary Chukwuma and Miracle Ezechukwu combined to run a championship-record 42.94 seconds. Liberia finished second while Ghana claimed bronze.

The story became even more interesting after fans discovered that 17-year-old Miracle Ezechukwu had only recently written her JAMB examination before helping Nigeria win gold. Honestly, from exam hall to continental champion in weeks? That is a serious career range.

Nigeria also claimed gold in the mixed 4x400m relay and closed the championships with another dominant performance in the women’s 4x400m relay. Veteran Patience Okon-George anchored the team to victory as Nigeria secured its 12th title in the event.

Beyond the relays, Rosemary Chukwuma had an outstanding championship. She won silver in both the women’s 100m and 200m while also helping Nigeria secure relay gold.

By the end of the championships, Nigeria finished fourth on the medal table with four gold, five silver and three bronze medals.

Surprise Moments and Emotional Victories Lit Up Accra

The championships also produced several unforgettable moments outside the major sprint races.

Eritrea’s Dawit Seare delivered one of the most emotional wins of the competition after taking gold in the men’s 5000m with a brilliant late kick. The victory marked only Eritrea’s second-ever gold medal in the championships’ history.

Niger’s Saguirou Badamassi also shocked many fans after defeating defending champion Louis François Mendy to win the men’s 110m hurdles title in 13.73 seconds. It was Niger’s first medal of the competition and one of the biggest upsets in Accra.

Zimbabwe added another historic chapter after stunning Botswana to win the men’s 4x400m relay gold in difficult rainy conditions. Kenya, meanwhile, continued to dominate distance events and finished top of the medal table with 17 medals overall.

The championships also highlighted the growing depth of African athletics. Teenagers, university athletes and experienced Olympians all shared the same stage, showing that the continent’s future in track and field remains incredibly bright.

As the curtains closed in Accra, one thing became clear: African athletics is evolving quickly, and the rest of the world should be paying very close attention.
