Nigeria has secured its first-ever Olympic qualification in beach volleyball after Esther Onyinye Mbah and Pamela Miyoum Bawa defeated Morocco in the final of the 2026 African Beach Volleyball Nations Championship in Alexandria, Egypt.
The Nigerian pair won the women’s final 2-0, with the sets ending 21-18 and 21-10, to claim the African title and secure the continent’s qualification slot for the women’s beach volleyball tournament at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. The result was also confirmed by the Confederation of African Volleyball and the International Volleyball Federation.
Mbah and Bawa turn a setback into a breakthrough
The final carried extra significance for Mbah and Bawa because Morocco had already beaten them earlier in the tournament. Rather than allowing that result to define their campaign, the Nigerian duo worked their way through the knockout stages and returned to face their Moroccan opponents with the biggest prize on the line.

They handled the opening set with composure, edging Morocco 21-18 before taking complete control of the second. Nigeria opened up a comfortable advantage and eventually closed out the set 21-10.
The straight-sets victory gave Mbah and Bawa the African championship title while simultaneously delivering Nigeria’s long-awaited Olympic ticket.
Nigeria finally clears the Olympic hurdle
For Nigerian volleyball, the qualification represents the end of a frustrating run of near misses.
Nigeria had reached the African championship final on three previous occasions without securing the Olympic opportunity. This time, Mbah and Bawa made sure the fourth attempt ended differently.
Their triumph also builds on a steady rise for the pair. They previously won the African U19 title in 2024 before earning a bronze medal at the senior African championship in 2025. One year later, they have moved to the top of the continent and earned a place on the world’s biggest sporting stage.
Nigeria Volleyball Federation President Musa Nimrod described the qualification as a victory for the entire country, recognising the players, coaches and wider team behind the achievement.

Los Angeles 2028 now awaits
The historic result means Nigeria will be represented in Olympic beach volleyball for the first time when the Games come to Los Angeles in 2028.
For Mbah and Bawa, the next two years will bring a new challenge. They have conquered the African championship and secured their place among the world’s Olympic competitors. Their qualification also gives Nigerian beach volleyball a bigger platform to develop interest, investment and opportunities for future athletes.
The journey to LA 2028 has officially begun, and this time Nigeria will arrive with a beach volleyball team carrying a piece of history with them.
