Nigeria has recorded another remarkable achievement on the global stage after a team of four students won the Gold Award in the Middle School Group category at the 2026 Spelling Bee World Cup in Shanghai, China.
The victory marks a major milestone as it came during Nigeria’s first-ever appearance at the global competition. The students outperformed competitors from around the world, adding another chapter to the country’s growing record of academic excellence.
The achievement was confirmed by the Nigeria Spelling Bee organisation, which described the victory as a proud moment for the country and the African continent.
A Historic Debut Ends in Gold
Team Nigeria earned its place at the Spelling Bee World Cup after progressing through the Nigeria Spelling Bee competition and the African Spelling Bee Championship.

Representing the country in Shanghai were Oluwadamilola Adeolu of St. Lawrence Metropolitan College, Ado-Ekiti; Abdurrahman Yusuf and Maryam Yusuf of Ar-Raheem International College, Ilorin; and Chinedu Okediachi of Madonna International Schools, Asaba.
Their journey to China followed months of intense competition and preparation. Before qualifying for the World Cup, the team competed against some of Africa’s brightest young spellers at the African Spelling Bee Championship in Harare, Zimbabwe.
Adeolu entered the tournament as the reigning African Spelling Bee Junior Champion after emerging winner in Zimbabwe, while Abdurrahman Yusuf finished third at the continental competition. Nigeria also emerged as the second-best overall team in Africa, setting the stage for an impressive outing on the world stage.
The team’s performance in Shanghai rewarded that preparation, with Nigeria clinching the gold medal in its debut appearance at the international event.

Young Nigerians Flying the Nation’s Flag
Following the announcement of the victory, Ar-Raheem International College celebrated the achievements of its students, Maryam Yusuf and Abdurrahman Yusuf, who both returned home with medals from the competition.
Ahead of the tournament, the students had expressed excitement about representing Nigeria on the global stage and competing alongside some of the world’s best young spellers.
For Adeolu, the competition represented more than just an academic contest. She had spoken about her desire to improve her vocabulary, build confidence and ultimately bring the trophy home for Nigeria.
That ambition has now become reality.
