The international break arrives with several Nigerian players giving Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle plenty to review after an eventful weekend across Europe and beyond.
From Gift Orban’s goalscoring display in Turkey to Calvin Bassey’s influential performance against Manchester United, Nigerian players produced important contributions for their clubs. Tolu Arokodare also came off the bench to rescue a point for Ajax, while Ibrahim Olawoyin, Emmanuel Fernandez, Chibuike Nwaiwu and Stanley Nwabali also enjoyed notable outings.
For some of these players, the performances could prove particularly useful as they look to strengthen their cases for greater attention at international level.
Orban Continues Remarkable Start in Turkey
Gift Orban was arguably the standout Nigerian performer of the weekend as he continued his excellent start to the season with Amedspor.
The Hoffenheim loanee scored once and provided an assist in Amedspor’s 3-2 victory over Beşiktaş. Orban opened the scoring in the 13th minute with a long-range finish before setting up his side’s second goal as Amedspor established a 2-0 advantage.
The latest performance took his league tally to seven goals in six matches, alongside two assists. That return has made him the Turkish Super Lig’s joint-leading scorer alongside Mohamed Salah.
His form has also added to the conversation around his absence from Chelle’s latest Super Eagles squad, particularly with the striker consistently producing goals in Turkey.
Calvin Bassey also delivered an influential performance in England as Fulham drew 1-1 with Manchester United at Craven Cottage.
The defender won a second ball shortly after the hour mark, carried possession forward and fired a shot that United goalkeeper Senne Lammens could only parry. Lisandro Martínez followed up on the rebound to give Fulham the lead.
Fulham were unable to hold on, however, with Matheus Cunha equalising in the 89th minute.

Olawoyin, Fernandez and Nwaiwu Impress
Ibrahim Olawoyin also got his name on the scoresheet for Çaykur Rizespor, scoring in the 70th minute to bring his team level against Göztepe.
It was the midfielder’s first goal of the season and came during a strong attacking contribution that helped Rizespor briefly turn the game in their favour before a late penalty secured a 2-2 draw for Göztepe.
In Scotland, Emmanuel Fernandez completed another 90 minutes for Rangers as they defeated Celtic 1-0. The defender’s latest outing came after Rangers had already secured another victory against their rivals within the same week.
Fernandez recorded 12 defensive contributions, one key pass and 52 touches during the match, underlining his growing importance to the Scottish club.
Chibuike Nwaiwu also completed the full match for Trabzonspor in their impressive 4-0 victory over Galatasaray. The defender recorded eight defensive contributions and 52 touches as Trabzonspor secured a convincing win.

Arokodare Rescues Ajax
Tolu Arokodare made an immediate impact after coming off the bench for Ajax against Excelsior.
Ajax took the lead through Julian Brandt, but Lennar Hartjes equalised before half-time. Aymen Sliti then put Excelsior ahead in the 62nd minute.
Arokodare was introduced for Kasper Dolberg and needed only two minutes to restore parity, finishing to make it 2-2.
The goal was his sixth across all competitions for Ajax this season. The result leaves Ajax second in the Eredivisie with 14 points from seven matches.
In South Africa, Stanley Nwabali also enjoyed a positive outing, keeping his third clean sheet of the campaign as Chippa United secured their first win of the season.
With the international break now underway, these performances give Chelle several club displays to assess as preparations continue for Nigeria’s upcoming fixtures.
