Nigeria is set to make another statement on the global academic stage as four outstanding students represent the country for the first time at the 2026 World Spelling Bee in Shanghai, China.
The development comes amid a remarkable period for Nigerian education. In recent weeks, we have reported on Nigerian students earning global recognition, including two students honoured by Cambridge as the world’s best in English and Mathematics, a 16-year-old making history as Nigeria’s youngest Chartered Accountant, and young scholars who won gold medals at the International STEM Olympiad in Rome. Now, another group of exceptional students is carrying the nation’s hopes onto the world stage.
The team will compete at the World Spelling Bee from July 10 to 20 after progressing through both the Nigeria Spelling Bee and the African Spelling Bee Championship.
Four Outstanding Students Carry Nigeria’s Hopes
Representing Nigeria are Oluwadamilola Adeolu of St. Lawrence Metropolitan College, Ado-Ekiti; Abdurrahman Yusuf and Maryam Yusuf of Ar-Raheem International College, Ilorin; and Chinedu Okediachi of Madonna International Schools, Asaba.

According to the Nigeria Spelling Bee organisers, the team’s qualification reflects months of dedication and success across national and continental competitions. Announcing the milestone, the organisers described Nigeria’s participation as a historic achievement.
“For the first time ever, Nigeria will be represented at the Spelling Bee World Cup as four outstanding young spellers prepare to compete in Shanghai, China. Their journey has been one of excellence and determination, beginning with the Nigeria Spelling Bee, progressing to the African Spelling Bee Championship in Harare, Zimbabwe, and now advancing to the world stage,” the organisation said.
The organisers added that the students would be competing not only for Nigeria but also as representatives of Africa among some of the world’s finest young spellers.
A Journey Built on Excellence
Leading the team is Oluwadamilola Adeolu, the 2026 African Spelling Bee Junior Champion.
Her rise has been built on years of consistent excellence. Before winning the continental title in Harare, she finished as runner-up at the 2023 MTN Spelling Bee, placed second at the 2024 Ekiti State Spelling Bee, ranked fifth at the 2025 African Spelling Bee, and finished second at the 2025 Nigeria Spelling Bee.
Her teammate, Abdurrahman Yusuf, also impressed at the African championship, securing third place and helping Nigeria finish as the second-best overall team at the competition.
Speaking ahead of the competition, Adeolu said she was excited about the opportunity to compete with some of the world’s best young spellers while developing her vocabulary and confidence.
She also thanked the Nigeria Spelling Bee organisers, her parents, teachers, coaches and the Ekiti State Government for supporting her journey to the global stage.
