Nigeria has another teenage sporting sensation to celebrate after 14-year-old Goodness Ekunke emerged champion at the inaugural FIDE World Amateur Rapid Chess Championship, defeating a field of experienced players to claim a historic global title in Abuja.
The Ogun State-born chess prodigy finished with an impressive nine points from 11 rounds to become the first player ever to win the newly introduced championship. His triumph adds another milestone to Nigeria’s growing reputation for producing exceptional young talents across different sports.
The tournament, organised by the International Chess Federation (FIDE) in partnership with the Nigeria Chess Federation, attracted players from several countries and featured an 11-round rapid format with a 15-minute time control and a 10-second increment per move.

From Nigerian Wonderkid to World Champion
Popularly known as “Boss Baby,” Ekunke has been one of Nigeria’s brightest chess prospects for years. Long before his latest achievement, he had already built a reputation for defeating opponents much older than himself.
He first gained national attention after becoming Nigeria’s Under-14 chess champion at the age of eight. Years of steady development culminated in another remarkable performance on home soil as he outplayed a competitive international field to lift the world title.
Ekunke opened the tournament strongly and maintained his consistency throughout the competition. His final-round draw against fellow Nigerian FIDE Master Eugene Unwana proved enough to secure the championship after accumulating nine points across the 11 rounds.
The victory placed him ahead of Unwana and another Nigerian FIDE Master, Bomo Kigigha, who both finished on 8.5 points, with the silver and bronze medals decided on tie-breaks.
A Tournament Full of Surprises
While Ekunke eventually lifted the trophy, the championship produced several memorable moments.
One of the biggest stories came from 17-year-old Joseph Sambo, whose fearless performances briefly threw the title race wide open. Sambo stunned spectators by defeating tournament leader Ekunke in the eighth round after earlier overcoming Bomo Kigigha, who also serves as Ekunke’s coach and mentor.
He followed those victories with another impressive win over India’s Sahil Shejal to move firmly into title contention. However, defeats in his final two matches ended his challenge, leaving him fourth with 7.5 points, just outside the medal positions.
The event also showcased strong international participation, with players from India and Cameroon finishing among the leading competitors, highlighting the growing global appeal of the championship.
